VBARC and VBCERT Offer Ham Classes

VBARC and VBCERT come together to offer a series of Ham Radio classes in order to get your FCC Technician and General license to talk local and around the world by radio. Our own Jim Lindsey AG4XT is working closely with representative from VBCERT to coordinate this exceptional training at the Fire Training Center to teach this license class. To obtain training to go from no license to General Class amateur operator will be provided from 7 PM to 9:30 PM on the class dates. Options are available for those whom only wish to obtain their Technician license and for those that already have it and just want the General instruction.

Did we mention that the Classes are FREE? Yes, that is right, the instruction is free, the only cost to you will be the administrative costs required by the VEC (Volunteer Examiner Coordinator) and that is $15 due on test day.

Classes will be February 11, 16, 18, 23, 25, March 2 & 4, and testing will be on Tuesday March 9. The exams will generally take about 30 to 45 minutes to complete.

No class material is needed but bring some paper and a pencil to take some notes. This will be a PowerPoint, web based presentation class with questions and answers throughout the class.

All classes are not mandatory but it will help on the test. Additionally, walk-in's are allowed, but registration is preferred. If you have been studying on your own and just wish to take the exams, you are more than welcome to show on test day!

The Hampton Public Service Team and the Southern Peninsula Amateur Radio Club (SPARC) will be holding a Technician Class training session at the Northampton Baptist Church located at 1409 Todds Lane in Hampton on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm. The dates of the class are January 23, 30 and February 13, 20 & 27 with a test session slated for March 6. There WILL NOT be a class on February 6 due to Frostfest.

This class is not required to obtain your Amateur Radio license. The group provides instruction aimed at producing competent hams that can pass the Technician and maybe even the General amateur radio class examinations.

The class is free but you will need the book, “The ARRL Ham Radio License Manual” 1^st Edition (c) 2006 #9639. The cost of the book is $24.95. The group anticipates having a supply of the books on hand for the first class. The books are also available at Hilton Sport and Hobby Shop in Newport News and directly from the ARRL.

There is a $15.00 testing fee collected on the day of the test which goes to the FCC.
