Amateur Radio Emergency ServiceŽ (ARES)

The Amateur Radio Emergency ServiceŽ (ARES) consists of licensed amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment, with their local ARES leadership, for communications duty in the public service when disaster strikes.

ARES membership requirements

Every licensed amateur, regardless of membership in ARRL or any other local or national organization is eligible to apply for membership in ARES.  Training may be required or desired to participate fully in ARES.  Please inquire at the local level for specific information.  Because ARES is an Amateur Radio program, only licensed radio amateurs are eligible for membership. The possession of emergency-powered equipment is desirable, but is not a requirement for membership.

How to get involved in ARES

To participate in ARES you register with Terry Buzzard KA8TNF  email

ARES Structure & Coordinator

ARES has its own physical boundary and Management structure.  The smallest entity is the District which reports up to a section. Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Isle of Wight County all make up District 9. Terry Buzzard, KA8TNF, is a Asst DEC for our region.  He is also our representative for the club.  Terry works with the City of Va Beach's Emergency Coordinator when appropriate events require our services.

Terry will be putting together a lot of information that will be placed on this website so please come back to this page often to see what is going on in this part of the hobby.
