Amateur Radio Licensing
Amateur or Ham Radio is one of two "Hobbies" that the United States Government requires a person to have a license prior to allowing you to participate. There are three levels of licensing, Technician, General and Extra. Each class of license allows additional priviledges to the operator. All classes require you take a written test and pass with a 70% or greater level. Each test has 35 or 50 multiple choice questions. Licenses are issued for a 10 year period.
Studing for the tests can take the form of attending a local class, using Licensing Guides or studing by using the internet. The subject areas include knowing the Federal Communications Commission Rules, knowing how to operate a radio station, learning about radio-wave propagation, understanding electrical principals, knowing circuit componets, the basics of practical circuits, understanding radio signals and emmissions, antennas and Radio Frequency Radiation Safety.
License administration is provided by Volunteer Examiners. Testing or VE sessions are held on a regular basis in the region. The Virginia Beach Club holds exams on a regular basis led by our Lead VE Coordinator Ed Williams, KN4KL. Advance notice is not required to take a test. You must bring proper identification to the exam and a $15 fee to cover expenses. The VE will provide the current FCC Form 605 for you to complete to take the proper exam. The exams are graded upon completion and you will know if you have passed the exams that you have taken. The paper work is then filed and the FCC will notify you of your new license. Copies of the license can be obtained from the FCC Universal License Database.
